Free Pizza Thursdays – Angry Pirate

Update: this special is no longer available

Angry Pirate is offering free shared pizzas for anyone who purchases a beer, wine or cocktail at 5-8pm on Thursdays…that’s pretty aye-right! The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 6 “The Angry Pirate’s new Thursday special will have all feeling like they have struck gold, with a cocktail (or beer and wine if that is what you fancy) opening the treasure chest to free pizza slices. Get in between 5-8pm otherwise your dreams of free pizza will walk the plank.” – TimeOut Sydney The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 1 Since I now get off at Redfern to walk to work in Alexandria, I thought this was the perfect place for after work pizza and drinks- and I was right! It’s opposite to Redfern station on Redfern street although the lady out the front offering free pizza to passerbyers. The sign outside welcomes you aboard their stable ship bar. Ahoy! The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 2 The tables, chairs and even the bar is made from wood and they’ve polished it well if it was made from a wrecked ship. The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 4 We sat ourselves at the back of the bar where there were some cushions and wine barrel tables. I must admit, the artwork is pretty amazing on all four walls! The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 9 Looking through the menu, we go through the beers, wines, cocktails and ‘pizza galley’.Cocktails were on the agenda and here’s what we tried: Angry and Sour is grog, amaretto, pomegranate liqueur, lime, vanilla and egg white and it’s the favourite for the girls! Oh yes, we also got plenty of BBQ popcorn for the table. The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 12 Coco Melon Margherita has 1880 coconut tequila, fresh pressed watermelon, fresh mint and lime juice. We expected more of a watermelon flavour so that lacked. It came in a martini glass. Pirate’s Tea Party is a mixture of vodka, gin, rum, elderflower, mint, lemon, fruit tea. The flavours were a food combination with a bit more acidity than we liked. The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 13 I chose the Grog Zombie. There’s grog, zombie mix (what does this even mean?), pineapple, passion fruit, angry pirate bitters  and rum. When it came out, it was oh fiiiiiiirrrreeee. The bartender had to come out and explain the options of how to drink it. He recommended that I blow the flaming passion fruit filled with Bacardi and sugar, drop it into the drink and have it as a cocktail. The other option was to drink the shot straight out ahaha…oh, I mean after blowing out the flame! I absolutely loved it and wouldn’t hesitate to get it 5 times in a row. Sadly it’s 2 max per person. The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 14 NB: Grog is an alcoholic drink, usually rum diluted with water, but in this context you could use it to refer to any alcoholic beverage other than beer, and they aren’t prepared to be picky about that, either. Call your beer grog if you want. The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 8 In terms of the free pizza, it’s not ‘buy 1 drink, get 1 whole pizza free’. Pizzas come out in twos throughout the night. Luckily there are vegetarian options but don’t expect gluten free pizzas. One of my friends is allergic to tomato and we managed to get a chipotle pizza instead and even our very own molten pizza- thanks crew! Amazing service. The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 11 We actually managed to eat a LOT of pizza during the night over many drinks and bottles of wine. Arrrrrrrrrrr! The Angry Pirate free pizza thursdays - photo 16 Rating Review: (1-5, with 5 being exceptional) Event (Angry Pirate free pizza Thursdays): 4.75/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Service: 5/5 Value: 4.75/5 Would I recommend going to Angry Pirate’s free pizza Thursdays? If you like alcoholic drinks and pizza, then heck yes! Choose the right cocktails and you’ll be having heaps of fun at this funky place. All the pizzas have 4 toppings max, so they’re simple and do the trick! Highlight: My Grog Zombie cocktail. I seem to have a thing for cocktails lit on fire. I mostly liked the fruity flavour of the drink. The staff were amazing and sooo friendly and as mentioned above, they were happy enough to cook a pizza for a friend with food requirements. I also loved the ambience of the place. Tops! Suggestion of improvement: when the pizzas came out, the staff left them on the counters so we had to get up from our seats to get the pizza slices. It would’ve been better if staff came around to make sure everyone had their fair share but I guess it’s more cost effective leaving them there. $4 drinks at Harbour View Hotel – North Sydney

From 5:30-7pm, Harbour View Hotel at 17 Blue Street North Sydney has $4 drinks and $10 cocktails: the pianist plays, you listen, and have (multiple) drinks.

Funnily enough, this hotel is right next to where I work so it was definitely too convenient when my friends asked to come here. I was stoked!

When you walk up the stairs at the main entrance, head to the left and follow the path into the door glasses.

The place is spacious, modern and the people in there were classy, dressed up and potentially for the slightly older crowd. But I must admit, I would prefer it here because chairs and tables were apart, you could have your long discussions where you could easily hear the other person, and it’s not that busy.

In the background there was a lovely lady playing the piano and singing soulfully. Elegant. So we looked at the drinks and the choices were basically from wine and beer for $4.

The cocktails were $10 before 7 and listed below is the list.

There were quite a few bartenders which was great and we didn’t have to wait to be served! What’s even better was that we were able to get a tab card and bill it all onto it.

Harbour View Hotel - photo 3

As a result, we had 2 rounds of cocktails:
A martini with too much salt on its brim, a Slice of Heaven which tasted like creaming soda which was sooooooo delicious, and a martini which tasted like kerosene. LOL. #obviouslythepeoplewhohadithadfunopinions

Second round we all got coffee martinis and they were absolutely fantastic! If you’re a coffee drinker, this is your cocktail!

Harbour View Hotel - photo 6

There’s also mulled wine FYI! Fantastic for the winter blues.

There was even a wine cellar in the bar and we were there for quite some time. Because one of my friends had been to the hotel before, a secret sneaky thought is going up to the 14th level (the top) and looking out at the window. It’s magic and it is why I call this area my new home.

Scenic tip – head back out to the entrance, go up and down the stairs on the right and end up at Lavender Bay. At the Indian Harbourview restaurant, walk down and you’ll be at the water. Follow the path to the left and it will lead you go Luna Park and the Harbour Bridge 🙂

Would I recommend going to Harbour View Hotel bar? Yes! bars in the city tend to be too busy and filled with a gazillion business workers. You can’t get a drink because the line is too long and you can’t hear your mates next to you because there are too many people. This place takes advantage of its space with a very chilled area and fast service.

Highlight: being able to have your space is a key factor in my books. If you want a place to chat and catch up with friends then this is the place to be..the prices for its cocktails don’t reflect how much they are actually worth so take advantage of the specials before 7!

Suggestion of improvement: would’ve loved to have the harbour view as the window seat but you can’t complain about it’s locality! It’s next to the train station, a 2 min walk from the water, and opposite Greenwood Plaza so if you need cheap food then it’s sorted!

Ends: never, but occurs daily

$29 Chocolate High Tea with Cocktails – Swissotel

Chocolate High Tea with Toblerone cocktails for $29 at the Swissotel was money well spent for a fancy day out.

Swissotel - photo 6

Crossroads Bar is located within the 5-star Swissotel Sydney. A place where traditional ideas and impeccable service unite with modern designs. Vibrant blues, purples and oranges pop against the dark wooden floor boards and elegant beige couches. Intimate pods provide exclusive entertaining spaces and an atmosphere of sophistication is evoked with floor to ceiling windows overlooking Market Street allowing natural light to flood the area.”

Swissotel - photo 14

Let the doorman tip his hat and salut you at the entrance before hopping on the escalators to level 7.

Swissotel - photo 1

It felt extremely clean and spacious and the restaurant and bar is cleverly closed in with the grey and red pods of seating – making it slightly romantic and secluded.

Swissotel - photo 2

The big red lanterns hanging from the ceiling definitely stood out.

Swissotel - photo 4

I showed my voucher and even requested for some candles for a friend’s birthday! The area was just simple and classy and I felt like a real lady sipping on my water in my (normal) cup.

Swissotel - photo 3

Our Toblerone cocktails came first and they were delicious. They tasted like chocolate milkshake with a tad of alcohol. Yuuuuum. Highly irresistible and I could’ve gulped it all in one go but no, I savoured it one sip at a time!

Swissotel - photo 5

Then the waitresses came with the high tea sets in a very professional manner. Ie professional attire and etiquette. However, I requested for a vegetarian option both in the email and I even double checked at the counter when I gave my voucher to them and still, there was no offer of replacement when we asked if there was supposed to be no meat not the tiers. All that effort for nothing! Urgh!

Swissotel - photo 7

Anyways, on the bottom there was a nice salmon bagel, cucumber sandwich, egg wrap, and the best was the mayo chicken on multi-grain baguette. Creamy and delicious! The savory was amazing.

Swissotel - photo 8

Scones should be the highlight of every high tea. There was a plain and chocolate one. Although I took the plain one, I thought it was very tasty, a bit fluffy and the jam was a very nice compliment. I loved how the top rises- let’s just say I love muffin tops!

Swissotel - photo 9

On the top, it was absolutely jam packed with chocolate. The chocolate cake was sooooooo chocolatey. It was like eating a block of soft chocolate. I’m not a fan of cream but the profiteroles were a nice touch with crushed pistachios on top. Again, the chocolate tart was dense and extra sweet with the cream and white chocolate flake.

Swissotel - photo 10

The best was the berry compote with the layer of chocolate mousse! A mixture of slightly sweet and sweet n soft textures!

Swissotel - photo 11

Girls love to talk and indeed we did until the coffee came. We were choc-ed it and could not order a hot chocolate haha! I had a skimmed cappuccino and by the way, you get a bigger glass if you get the latte. I don’t know why.

Swissotel - photo 12

One of us ordered the T2 tea and got a large fancy teapot.

Loved the high tea here and it was definitely worth it’s money!! Chocolate high tea and cocktail for the chocoholics out there is like living a dream at Swissotel!

Would I recommend going to Chocolate High Tea with Cocktails at Swissotel to a friend? Straight out- Yes. How can you refuse high tea AND cocktails for only $29? Normally a cocktail at a cocktail bar is around $20 and a high tea could be up to $50pp. This is crazy amazing so if you like chocolate this is definitely where you should be heading!

Highlight: Oh the toberlone cocktail was such a sweet treaat!! I wish we could’ve ordered more!! Who says you can’t drink in the middle of the day? The place was really cute.. shame there weren’t any pods available to sit in so we had a spacious table and couch.

Suggestion of improvement: I was quite disappointed with the vegetarian option not coming out. I always take care when people have dietary requirements and in this case it was my vego friend’s birthday. Communication needs some improving!
